My initial thought was, "That sounds like a very Katie-like thing to do. She has probably been looking things up in the dictionary since she could walk."
However, since that initial thought,I have noticed that regularly Katie has a question that I cannot answer, then she asks me, "Well, why don't you look it up?" And I have realized that she learned that question from me.
Why am I telling you this? So that you might understand why I could not refrain from looking up "'bated breath". Here it is: This phrase was first known to be written by Shakespeare in the Merchant of Venice. "'Bated" is a contraction of the word "abated". So the phrase means that you almost stop breathing as a result of some strong emotion. But here is a punny poem using "baited":

Cruel Clever Cat

Sally having swallowed cheese,
Directs down holes the scented breeze,
Enticing thus with baited breath
Nice mice to untimely death.

I LOVE Dictionary.com!marcinoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-41033263906730151992010-06-02T07:15:41.376-07:002010-06-02T07:15:41.376-07:00#9, what summer?#9, what summer?kathynoreply@blogger.com
