Mostly it made me want to travel. But I was also kind of fascinated by the whole meditation part. We are told to meditate in scripture, but I don't know many people who do it. I didn't. It seemed too new-agey for me. But I decided to try it. At that time I was so burdened by life. There were so many questions and so much waiting and so much on my shoulders and weighing me down inside and out. And I'd already learned the hard way to not ignore the stress, but to deal with it. And what better way than to slow down and meditate? So one morning after Arrty went to work and the kids were still asleep, I sat on my bed and closed my eyes and tried to block out all my thoughts of to do lists and human worries. I breathed and focused and breathed some more.

And suddenly I was standing in the presence of God! I was there before the Creator of the world but I couldn't run to him and throw my arms around His neck like I wanted to! Because my hands were full of stuff. Crazy stuff like cups and books and papers. And hanging on my arms were bags of more stuff. On my back were backpacks full of who knows what. There was even stuff tied to my legs and trailing behind me. I wanted to talk to Him, but I kept dropping all my stuff. And I was so worried about stopping and picking up and balancing all the stuff. I felt helpless. And embarrassed. And I didn't know what to do. So I looked up at Him and I didn't have to say a word. In an instant, He knew my heart and mind and soul. And He looked at me and said, "Jen, put it all down. Put all the stuff down. Just let everything go."

Then I opened my eyes. It felt like a really clear dream...but more than a dream. My heart was pounding and my eyes were wet with tears. I was a little shaken. It was so real. And true. After that I was able to put some of my stuff down. And my heart and soul were lighter. And even now, when I start to feel overwhelmed, I remember and am able to put the stuff down. Because He told me I needed to. And so I choose not to carry the things that weigh me down. And I am better for it.

Was it a dream? Was it more? I choose to believe the latter. And because of that, I am better. Which is what God does for anyone who chooses Him. He make us better.

I wrote this post in February of 2013, but never posted it. Now, almost 3 years later, I feel like a different person. I can let go so much easier. And I'm glad to say that so many of those burdens that I held that day are gone. He took them or I dropped them with His help. Either way, my walk is lighter.

I remember this experience like it was yesterday. It really did change me, as strange as it might seem. I still often hear His voice telling me to "put it down" and see His face smiling His patient and kind smile. I have to admit that I haven't purposefully meditated since that day, but I do often imagine myself at the feet of God when I pray. And now, whenever I hear Him speak to me, He calls me Jen. Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00136291767656065524noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-40871149147530407062015-05-18T13:56:00.001-07:002015-05-18T13:56:25.818-07:001435 years ago today, Mt. St. Helens erupted in Oregon and forever changed the landscape of miles and miles of the northwest.

And 14 years ago today, my middle baby was born and forever changed the landscape of my heart.

This kid. This kid is indescribable. He's just someone you've got to meet to begin to understand. But here's my best shot at describing him.
He is hilarious and has been from the beginning.
He's smart in so many ways, which makes his funny that much funnier.
He is sensitive. He cares about people and their feelings.
He absolutely can't fathom why one human being would hurt another.
He is single-minded. Once he gets something in his head, it is not budging...and neither is he.
He loves football! Like crazy loves football! Watching, playing, studying, learning...and he's determined to play in the NFL. (I hope he makes it because he's promised to pay me back the $175 I spent on him to play junior tackle last season when he gets signed.)
He's a good big brother and plays with his little sister even though he might rather be doing something else. He's a good little brother but don't tell him I said so. He'll deny it.
He is handsome...blonde hair, blue eyes, and a smile that can melt any heart.
Some people think he's quiet...he's not.
He loves to have fun. He's always wanted everything to be fun, much to his mama's chagrin at times.
He can simultaneously make me laugh and want to ground him for all eternity.
He says that pretty much every meal I cook is his favorite meal ever. And says thank you after eating it.
He has been shown numerous times how to do his own laundry, but inexplicably still can't do it.
He is taller than me and loves to remind me of that fact every day.
He is the apple of my eye and my own little volcano.

Happy birthday, Adam. I love you with every ounce of my being.

I fully admit that I'm not really an animal person. If I come to your house and you have a pet, I will give it an obligatory pat and move on. I will not pick it up or encourage a relationship of any kind with it. Don't get me wrong. I love animals in general and am fascinated by God's creatures. I just don't feel a bond or responsibility to treat them like a person. (Sorry, animal people.) Unless, apparently, it's my own pets.

I've discovered over the last twelve hours that I can in fact form a bond with animals...if they live at my house. Last night when I got home, I found out that our dogs, Jake and Piper, had once again escaped their pen. They have a rather large area to run and play, but every once in a while they like to run off for an adventure. They hadn't gotten out for a long time since Arrty and the boys had fortified their fence. But Monday night Jake started barking like crazy and trying with all his might to get out. I figured that there must be a wild animal in the woods by our house and Jake wanted to get to it...probably to play. Both dogs finally pushed through the gate. They ran on to the porch and we put them back in the pen and Josh fixed it so that it couldn't be pushed open so easily. But then last night at the same time, Jake wanted out again. They were able to find a way through a weak spot in the fence and went on their way without us knowing. Arrty called the sheriff's office to report them missing at about 6:00 and drove around looking for them with no luck. At 11:00 we got a call that two dogs had been hit by a car about a mile from our house and that they fit our dogs' descriptions. Arrty drove up there and sure enough, it was them. Both hit. Both gone.

I'm sad about it. Sadder than I expected to be. I confess that I said just recently that once Jake and Piper were gone, I'd never get another pet. But I thought it would be a while. Jake was ten years old, but still healthy and active. We got him when he was two months old and he was the cutest little chocolate lab puppy ever. Piper was about five years old. We adopted her from the shelter when she was eight months old. She was border collie/beagle and was so sweet and helped keep Jake young. Losing both of them at the same time is terrible. Just sad and terrible.

The kids are doing okay with it. And I'm doing okay this morning. Arrty is the one having to deal with the aftermath and taking care of them, so he's having a harder time. Keep us in your thoughts today and give your pets an extra pat for me.

1. Silky shoe laces. When a student walks in and excitedly shows me his new shoes, on the outside I tell him how cool they are, but on the inside I am evaluating the laces and calculating how many times per day I will have to tie them. It seems to me, after all these years of wearing shoes, humans should be able to invent a lace that will stay tied.

2. Double layered coats. Sure, they are warm and those layers might come in handy if you need to take them apart to have a lighter jacket. But from experience I can tell you that those layers do not work for little kids. The sleeves get all jimmy-jacked every time they take their coat off. Every. Single. Time. And fixing them is too complicated for little hands. So at this point, I am an expert on the sleeve adjustment process.

3. Gogurt wrappers. Gogurt itself is genius. Yogurt that you can suck out of a tube and don't need a spoon for?! Perfect! It's the wrappers that are the problem. The "tear here" message and slit is too small or too high or nonexistent on at least 75% of wrappers. That is why I have a pair of "gogurt scissors" on my desk.

4. Apple sauce cups, pudding cups, and fruit cups. Again, good idea in theory. But the little tab that is supposed to be there to lift and pull is usually too small for little fingers. And so you know what they do? They try to use their teeth. And then when that fails, they ask the teacher to open it. And she has to make a new rule that if it's been in a mouth she will not open it. Or she caves and does it anyways and gets kindergarten spit all over her hands and has to wash her hands one million times per day.

5. Scented markers. Not a good idea at all. First they smell them and have polka dotted noses. Then then taste them. They taste the markers, people!

6. Fancy pencils. There is always a fight about who gets the sparkly pencil or the one with kittens or the one with stars. Shoot, they even fight over the one with the gold metal band at the top instead of the silver metal band. It's true.

7. Fleece lined gloves. It takes about three recesses for the thumbs of lined gloves to become impossible to get a thumb into. The lining only matches up in the fingers for that long. Then they might as well be mittens.

8. Pizza lunchables. This is the messiest (and grossest) of the lunchable family. No teacher in her right mind would give a five year old a plastic packet of tomato sauce and a cup of grated cheese and expect anything less than floor to ceiling mess.

9. Plastic zippers. They stick. They break. They split. And then the kid is stuck in the jacket. Or has to figure out how to get in and out of it with it zipped. It can be done, but it's not easy.

10. Light up shoes. Because all a bunch of 5 year olds needs is another reason to jump and kick things. Light up shoes are toys. On feet. That the teacher can't confiscate and put in the "confiscated toy drawer." Thanks for that, shoe makers. Can't you use your powers for good...like inventing shoe laces that stay tied?!Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00136291767656065524noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-1361928900020000972014-04-11T13:19:00.000-07:002014-04-11T13:19:30.621-07:00ExtremeI always wonder about people who put bumper stickers on their cars. I tend to think that they are people who talk a lot. Share everything. Discuss politics and religion and all those things that you have to be careful with in mixed company. Maybe that's not true of bumper sticker people. Maybe it is. I really don't know, because come to think of it, I don't think I know anyone who has a bumper sticker on their car.

I often read bumper stickers and try to figure out what kind of person drives that car. Sometimes the stickers make me laugh. Or think. But mostly I wonder what in the world someone was thinking when they stuck that sticker on their car. There are bumper stickers that I dislike. The ones that insult politicians...whether I voted for them or not. The ones that put down other people's beliefs...whether those beliefs are mine or not. The ones that use bad language...because little kids who are learning to read, read everything...and big kids read everything, too.

Today I saw a bumper sticker on a big, green truck today that said, "Extremely Rightwing." Really? Just what does that mean? And just what does this person want me to think about them? Am I supposed to make assumptions about their political beliefs? Am I supposed to honk if I agree...or if I don't? Should I assume that we couldn't be friends...or that we could be best friends? Am I expected to be moved to become extremely rightwing, too? I just don't know what the purpose of such a bumper sticker is.

Maybe I just don't understand being extremely anything when it comes to politics. I'm slightly on the right, I suppose. But I'm okay with those who aren't. If you and I were having a conversation about something and you asked me my opinion, I'd tell you. But the person driving behind me down the highway or stopped behind me at a stoplight, do they really care what I think? I don't think so.

There are some things in my life that I feel extreme about. I feel extremely protective of my children. My inner mama bear is lying, ready to pounce on anything that threatens my cubs. And I am extreme about the love I have for my husband. After 22 years, it is a comfortable, safe love. One that will last forever because we are both extremely dedicated to the life we've made together. I am extremely thankful for my family, the ones who live under my roof and the ones who don't. We are extremely blessed to have each other and the relationships we share. I am extremely happy about the sister-friends God has put in my life. These girls are the best...really, the absolute best. I am extremely loved by God, Creator of the universe. And I try to love Him extremely in return.

So, yes. Extreme exists in my world, I suppose. I guess I just feel like "extreme" should be reserved for kind, loving, good things. Things that unite us as people. Things that divide us should not be extreme. They should be...what's the opposite of extreme? Mild, moderate, slight? Or even less? Is being rightwing uniting or dividing? I'd have to ask someone who is to know for sure. Are my extremes uniting? I hope so.

So if you ever see a bumper sticker that says all of that, let me know. Maybe I'll stick that one on my minivan. But probably not, because I'm not really a bumper sticker kind of girl.Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00136291767656065524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-40209912267981681922014-02-03T14:12:00.001-08:002014-02-03T14:12:28.732-08:00Really?! Boxes?A few months ago, Arrty was reading a book given to him by his boss. It's called "Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box." Sounds exciting, right? Well, when he was almost finished with it, he asked me if I'd read it when he was done. He said it was really good and would be good for me to read. Uh-oh. I told him that maybe I would while secretly figuring he'd forget about it and I would escape reading a book with both "leadership" and "self-deception" in the title. But he didn't forget. And every time he saw me reading something new, he'd ask me if I'd read his book yet. No. No, I hadn't. Even though there was a really sweet pink post it on the front that said, "Jen, please read. I love you!" Really?! Leadership? Self-deception? Mysterious boxes that I should get out of? I had absolutely no desire to read it. So I didn't. Until finally I did. Arrty noticed a new book that I had begun reading and asked me again about his book. I told him I didn't want to read it. I don't like non-fiction. There were so many other things I wanted to read instead. But then he pulled out the big guns. He reminded me that I read all kinds of books that my friends give me. Why wouldn't I read the one he gave me? After briefly considering "losing" his book, I realized that he was right. Sigh. I wasn't being fair.

So later that evening, I sheepishly went into the bedroom and picked up the book. It's written like a conversation between a man and his boss. Not your typical leadershippy style of writing. And I was getting through it pretty quickly, which was helpful. But then something strange happened. I started to get it. The whole thing about the leadership and the self-deception and the boxes. I was getting it. If I tried to tell you about it, I wouldn't get it right, so I'll just give you the gist. Every person that we come in contact with just wants to be seen as the person they are. But many of us, me included, often see people as objects that are getting in our way...on the roads, in line at the store, at our workplaces. But if we thought about others as people with their own hopes and dreams and goals and not deceive ourselves into thinking that our hopes and dreams and goals are more important than theirs, we'd all be better off. The guy driving too slowly in the fast lane might have had a recent car accident and is anxious about driving and is in the fast lane to avoid having to change lanes at his exit. The lady in line at the store who is using 23 coupons and is taking forever maybe only has enough money to pay for her groceries if she uses all those coupons. And the workplace...which for me is filled with 5 year olds...can be especially challenging. Every shoe I tie. Every question I answer. Every hand I guide to perfect letter writing. Every single one represents a person. A person someone loves and cherishes like I do my own children. A person with hopes and dreams and goals...and bright futures. And more than that, a soul on his or her journey through this life. Wow! That's big!

And all of this also translates to family relationships. Do I treat those I live with as their own person or do I let my needs/desires/selfishness get in the way and allow myself to see them as a hindrance. This hit me like a ton of bricks when I thought about it. Do I? I know I love my family with every fiber of my being. I cook and clean and shop for them. I spend what seems like every ounce of my energy on them. But do I deceive myself into thinking that my actions justify my feelings. Oh. My. Goodness. It was put to the test a few days after finishing the book.

If you know me at all, you probably know that I hate homework. Hate it. I give my students very little and only that so that their parents can see what they're learning. But the school the boys go to does not share my aversion to homework. So the boys have at least math every night. If you read my post about Adam, you already know he has some trouble with focus, so for him, homework is a long, drawn out fight to the finish. Sometimes he wins. Sometimes I win. But really we both lose, because four nights a week pretty much all he does all evening is math and pretty much all I do is sit with him so that he can focus enough to get it finished. When I was thinking about the way I treat my family, this situation came to mind. Because I know, I know, that in the past I've felt very bitter about having to do homework instead of my own chores or reading or playing Bubble Shooter. And I've said so...loudly. If only he'd get more done at school. If only he could focus more. I blamed him. Or his teacher. If only she'd give them time in class to work. If only she'd give them fewer problems. If THEY would only change, MY evenings would be so much easier. Now if that isn't self-deception, I don't know what is. So that night, when I wanted to huff and puff about homework, I took a deep breath and thought about how Adam is my child, whom I love with all my heart. Not about the books or the time or the what ifs. And guess what? We finished his homework without anyone screaming or crying.

This new way of thinking has carried over into all areas of my life. Now if I begin to get frustrated or impatient, I think of my box and that whoever is standing in my way is a person, not an object. It has helped me slow down and think through my feelings and actions. It's not easy. As a matter of fact, I texted Arrty one day shortly after finishing the book, "Dang boxes! I like my boxes! I don't want to be nice!" His reply, "Crickets." As in, "I'm just going to be quiet about that." I guess he has learned a thing or two over the last 21 years, after all.

If there's one thing in this world that we have to deal with every single day of our lives, it's other people. And it's hard. But it can be easier. By getting out of my "me" box and thinking of others as people, souls, I have been more able to be patient and kind like I should be. Like I want to be.

On Saturday night, January 11th, I took Josh, Adam, and their friend Sam to the Rock and Worship Roadshow in Spokane. (Arrty was going to go, but had to stay home and play Noah in the flooded basement.) I bought the tickets for the boys for Christmas and we were all excited about it. But I have to admit, that once the time actually rolled around I was wondering if it wasn't meant to be. There was the flooded basement and backyard. There was the driving to Spokane in 5:00 traffic. There was the taking three teenage boys to a sold out arena by myself. All of those things were enough to make me second guess my decision. But the boys were excited about going and under all the anxiety about it, I really wanted to go, too.

So we loaded up the van and headed west. The line to get into the parking lot was long and slow. We decided to park at the back of the parking lot and walk to the arena. Which was the right idea, because the rest of the parking lot was crazy. Once we got in and found our seats I had time to take a breath and take it all in. I know that there are bigger arenas than the one in Spokane, but there are a lot of people in there at a sold out show. A lot of people. Which led to some deep breathing and self talk to keep myself calm. Once I located all the exits, formed a plan of escape if I needed it, and convinced myself that I wouldn't go deaf from one concert even though I forgot my earplugs, I relaxed.

And now here's the part where I began to realize that I may never again go to a secular concert. The show started with a prayer. At which time I recalled the verse from Matthew that says,

"And when two or three of you are together because of me, you can be sure that I’ll be there.”

Well, there were certainly two or more of us gathered. And we were there because of Jesus. So, guess what! He was there. Maybe he was the guy sitting next to me. Or the little old lady three rows down. Or the teenage girl in front of me. Or maybe he was just everywhere. In every heart. And His peace that passes understanding came over me in a group of thousands of people where I would have normally been fighting a panic attack the whole time. He was there.

When the show started, I admit that I did wonder what I had gotten myself into. The first band, We As Human*, was loud. And hard. And I confess to asking Jesus right then and there how he felt about that. But then I listened harder to try to hear the words through the noise. And there He was...Jesus. And no matter what it sounds like, He loves to hear us sing His name. And throughout the night I continued to be convicted that everyone, no matter how they look or what they wear or how they choose to praise the Lord, every single person is loved by Jesus unconditionally and completely. And any one of those people is free to love Him in return.

After that, the night just kept getting better and better. The second band was The Neverclaim. They have kind of a southern rock sound. And I could understand most of the lyrics, which was a plus. Their song Mighty Jesus is amazing! That's when I finally knew I was in the right place.

Next was Royal Tailor. I kept thinking that they were the "boy band" of the bunch. There was even a moment of synchronized dance moves. They were really good, too. And I was surprised to learn after the concert that they were among my boys' favorites of the night.

Before or after Royal Tailor (my memory is foggy from the extreme volume), was Andy Mineo. A hip-hop, skateboarding, rapping artist from New York. He rode his skateboard on stage which was really weird when I couldn't see his feet but just him floating across the stage. He rapped about Jesus. And he jumped about Jesus. And he had thousands of us in the audience doing it, too! Josh especially liked him since he is the hip-hop fan in our house.

Then we saw a worship team from Columbia called Soulfire Revolution. They had a unique sound and a more intimate performance on just the front of the stage.

One of the headliners was Third Day. I had heard a few of their songs on Christian radio and had certainly heard of the band, but didn't really know what to expect live. I was pleasantly surprised by their performance. They were easily my favorite band of the night. The lead singer has the kind of voice I like to listen to. Deep and smooth with a little bit of a growl. And their whole sound was perfect for me. And then they did a short acoustic set while the stage was being reset. When they led the audience in an acoustic/acapella version of Blessed Assurance, I was sold. I loved it so, so much. Gotta love the acapella!

The last act of the night was Skillet. (First of all, where did they get their name. I must google it.) Skillet rocks! That's all I can say. In every sense of the word. I'm usually not a big fan of the hard alternative style of music, but there's something about Skillet that made me okay with it. They are great performers, too. They had a violinist and cello player who were amazing. And a stage with sections that would rise with different performers standing on them. Lights and smoke created a real "rock" atmosphere. I think I will check out some more of their music soon.

So now back to the reasons why I may never go to another secular concert.

Reason 1: Prayer. Nothing makes me feel more like I belong than prayer. And I can honestly say that I've never felt like I belonged at most of the other concerts I've gone to. But I belonged that night. We were all there for the same reason: to rock and worship.

Reason 2: Worship. I can't even explain the feeling of worshiping with thousands of people. It had less to do with the music or the singers than with the presence of God being there. You don't get that at secular concerts.

Reason 3: Security. I didn't have to worry about what was going to flash on the screens for my teenage sons to see. Or what was going to be blasted at them from the speakers. I'm not naive. I know what's in the world. But I will try, for however long I can, to let them be kids and keep them, when it's in my power, from being bombarded with worldly sights and sounds.

Reason 4: Safety. I didn't have to worry about the people around me. Knowing that we were all brothers and sisters gave me a sense of safety that made my night easier. And since they weren't selling beer, I didn't have to worry about having it spilled on me by the guy sitting behind me. (It's happened before.)

Reason 5: Jesus. That's reason enough for me.

All in all, the night was a roaring success. The boys had a ball and I was encouraged to see that all kinds of people who praise God in all kinds of ways are all in this whole Christianity thing together. All of us Third Day people can stand beside the We As Human people the Andy Mineo people and worship together. And isn't that how it's supposed to be. Because I sure think it is.

*The way We As Human had their name written on their set was very hard to read. So until about halfway through the concert when I saw it written more clearly, I thought they were called Weashu Man. Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00136291767656065524noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-56669433327272215322014-01-04T19:32:00.000-08:002014-01-04T19:32:57.774-08:00ResolvedI'm not really a resolution maker. I couldn't even tell you the last time I made new year's resolutions. But, I can look back at my journals for the last 20 years and see that I've had many of the same goals for all these years...live a healthier life, grow closer to God, be a better wife and mom. They have been, and will always be I suppose, my objectives in life. And over the last 20 years, I have become healthier (in some ways) and closer to God (in many ways) and a better wife and mom (most days). I admit that when I found 1995's journal and read what I'd written, I was discouraged. Really?! I STILL haven't reached those goals?! I'm STILL trying to be that person?! But I've come to realize that as long as I live, I will strive to meet those goals. I will always want to be healthier and holier and better. It's not a bad thing to have the same goals every year. Because will I ever be the best I can be? Not until Heaven. And if I can be just a little bit better as time goes by, I'll be happy.

So hello, 2014. Welcome to the world. I can't wait to see what adventures we'll share.Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00136291767656065524noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-38379362640006613012013-11-13T13:43:00.000-08:002013-11-13T13:43:00.148-08:00Dear WorldDear World,

You may not have noticed my son, Adam, yet. He hates to be the center of attention, so it's okay that you haven't noticed him. He likes it that way. But I want you to know more about him before you do. Because he's a special kid, my middle child. I've known a lot of kids in my life and career and have never known one quite like him.

He's highly sensitive. And I don't mean that in the way you might think. I mean it in the personality type way. There are people, 15-20% of people in fact, who have this type of personality. Adam is one of them. That means that his senses are heightened in every way. Bright lights are brighter. Loud noises louder. A little poke, very painful. He is extremely prone to car sickness and gets nauseous even on straight roads. (But strangely he loves roller coasters. The faster the better!) Ironically, he has a very high tolerance for some pain and barely made it to the emergency room for an appendectomy before his appendix burst because he didn't want to complain and be any trouble.

Highly sensitive people notice everything around them so are often easily distracted and seem to lack focus. That's not what it seems, though. He can be extremely focused on the things that are important to him. It's just not always what I, or you, World, think should be important. Please take time to see what he sees. Because frankly, he sees way more than most of the rest of us.

Regardless of distractions, he is a perfectionist. When he was in my kindergarten class, I could not figure out why the slightest mistake could cause a major meltdown. It was the perfectionism. And take it from me, a non-perfectionist, perfectionism in others can be very, very frustrating. Sometimes I just want him to get the job done. It doesn't have to be perfect! But just try telling him that. The upside is that if you are patient, whatever he is doing will be done well.

He is very intuitive. He can read other people's feelings much better than the average 12 year old...often better than the average 40 year old. Sometimes it's like he can read my mind. He knows what I'm thinking about the most random things. Once when I was going to get money out of the ATM for vacation, he knew how much I was going to get. The weird thing was, I didn't even know how much I was going to get until I got there. I had been debating in my head about how much we'd need and finally settled on $300. When he saw the amount, he said, "Mom, that's weird, I knew you were going to get $300." Weird indeed. Things like that happen often between he and I. He has also started experiencing frequent deja vu. I don't know if that has anything to do with his sensitivity, but I think it might.

He is also very clever and has an amazingly mature sense of humor...always has. When he was about three years old, he was in the bath and every time I pulled the plug, he'd close it so that he could play longer. After about the third time, I said, "Adam, if you close that again, you're going to get a spanking." To which he replied, "No closing costs, Mom." Really? No closing costs? He was three! (And had apparently seen way too many mortgage commercials.) That's just one example of many I could share about his unique sense of humor.

He is a thinker and has always been a child who asks questions way beyond his age. A lot of questions. He asks questions about the state of the world and God and other people. And he truly wants to know and cares about the answer. Sometimes his thinking leads to worry, which is, well, worrisome. I don't want him to worry when he's 12. At least not about things he has no control over. I try to encourage him to let me be the adult and to enjoy being a kid.

He is ultra-sympathetic. He hates to see people, or any creature really, suffer in any way. Even when he was very young, he would give up things to keep his brother happy. And he goes out of his way to make sure other's feelings don't get hurt. But if they do, he hurts for them. I love that about him. But, World, you might use that against him. Don't. We all need people who protect those who need protection. Embrace that about him.

He can become obsessive. Whatever it is that he is into at the time will fill his mind and rule his thoughts for as long as he is interested. I've learned to accept that about him. I might find Halo guys extremely unimportant, but he finds them fascinating. So I listen to the description of each one and try my hardest to appreciate what he appreciates.

He is a rule follower and a truth teller. Things are black and white to him. He has a hard time understanding why others can't just follow the rules. They're the rules for a reason. If he hears about someone doing something terrible in the world, it hurts his heart. He feels for the hurt ones and just can't understand why anyone would want to hurt others. Even when doing current events for his history class, he looks for news stories that are good or uplifting. Nothing about devastation, please.

Not until just recently while reading the book, The Highly Sensitive Child by Elaine Aron, did I realize how very special Adam is. I've always known he was different than my other children and all the children who have been a part of my life. Not bad or good, just different. Imagine my surprise when I learned that there are millions of people just like him in the world. And most don't even know that there are others like them. So, World, watch out for these special souls. Treat them with gentleness and understanding. They won't be the ones on center stage (although they make good actors because of their sympathetic and intuitive natures). They will be the ones working to make a better world because they truly care about others. They will be the ones finding cures for diseases because they are single minded in their interests. They will be the thinkers and planners and fighters for justice. And one of these special people is my Adam. So watch out, World, because when you do finally notice him, you'll never be the same.

Sincerely,
Adam's Mom

1. He was born on the first day of elk hunting season. I called my dad just as he was leaving for hunting that day 14 years ago to tell him that he might want to wait. That was the 9th. Josh wasn't born until the 10th. Dad waited...but went hunting on the 11th.
2. Since he was born on the first day of elk season, I knew it was only a matter of time before he spent his birthdays in the woods instead of with me. This is the fourth year that that's been true. (I'm not as okay with it as I pretend to be.)
3. He has one of those magnetic personalities that cause people to want to be his friend. He's always been kind of a charmer.
4. He finally likes school. After about the first week at his new school, he declared that "school's not so bad." That's as good as it's gonna get, I think. (He's still not crazy about the work, though.)
5. He's taller than me. He loves to stand next to me and remind me of that fact often. Honestly, I'm glad. If he was shorter than me, he'd be really short.
6. He loves all things fishing and hunting. He wants to be a professional fisherman when he grows up.
7. He has a great laugh. Just hearing him laugh, makes me laugh.
8. He is the epitome of "a growing boy." He's always hungry and seems to grow an inch everyday.
9. He was my guinea pig baby. By the time Adam came around, I was an expert compared to when Josh was born. I'd barely even held babies, no less kept them alive.
10. The day he was born was the day part of my heart began to walk around outside my body. And now, 14 years later, that still holds true...only 14 times stronger.

Happy birthday, Yosh. I love you more than words can say.
10. And she brings apple fritters.Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00136291767656065524noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-6185498370839912432013-08-04T16:40:00.000-07:002013-08-04T16:40:22.260-07:00Blessed SundayYesterday I had a date. One that I'd been looking forward to for over a week. One that was rare and precious. It was a date with my firstborn son. Just he and I. That is the rare part. I often find myself with time to spend with just Julianna. And sometimes with Adam. But time with Josh alone doesn't happen often enough. He has spent more nights away from home this summer than home. A lot more. Now that he's a teenager, he goes and does more than ever. He spends a lot of time at Grams and Pappy's house. (And he would move in with them if I let him...which they in no way discourage.) And today he left for a week at camp.

So yesterday I took him to town to get a few things for his trip and we decided to go to lunch. He chose Red Lobster. As we sat there waiting for our shrimp, we talked. About school next year and his time at camp and about the summer so far and what's left of it. He told me stories of his adventures and even shared a few of his concerns. And I soaked it in...every second.

Then he asked if maybe we could go to the movies. I remembered that Fast and Furious 6 was playing at the $2 theater and knew he wanted to see it again so I mentioned that. So after picking up a few things and a trip to say goodbye to Grams and Pappy, we headed to the movies. (And yes, that does make three times that I've seen it, but two of those was at the discount theater so it's okay. And also, yes, it is just as good the third time.) During the movie we laughed together and cheered together, even though we totally knew what was going to happen. And at one point, he even reached over and took my hand for a second. That, my friends, was worth the price of admission. And afterwards he told me thanks for the date more than once.

There were moments during our afternoon that I caught a glimpse of the little boy he used to be. And also moments when I saw a glimpse of the man he is becoming. It's strange, this mommyhood of a teenager. Bittersweet moments fill each day. Memories and hopes. Reflections and dreams. When I look up into his eyes, (yes, up), I still see that baby they placed in my arms all those years ago. Never, during those first days, did I imagine these days. I knew they would come, but here they are so, so quickly.

Those few short hours that we spent together were much more than lunch and a movie. So much more. It was a reminder to me that this person, this young man, is still my little boy. I just can't tell him that. And it was a reminder to him that he's still my little boy...even if I don't tell him.
10 things about my wedding day...which happened 21 years ago today.

1. I was young. Of course at the time I didn't think I was all that young. I was 20. Surely that was old enough to know all I needed to know to do grown up things like get married. Surely.
2. He was young. But older than me. He was 21. So if I didn't know something, surely he would. Surely.
3. We wore white. Both of us. It meant something to him to wear white, too. I appreciate that now.
4. I bought my dress from a JC Penney catalog. I did not try it on, just ordered. It fit.
5. My bridesmaids wore teal. Teal dresses with huge puffy sleeves and a big bow on the butt. And shoes dyed teal to match. But in my defense, we were just barely out of the 80's.
6. We made our own mixed tape of all the music for the ceremony. There was a lot of cheesy 80's love songs. But at the time they were soooo romantic.
7. Friends and family did all the decorating, made the cake, took the pictures, and organized the ceremony. In all, including the dress, I think it cost around $500.
8. I was a little nervous. Okay...I was scared to death. I don't remember why now.
9. Melted wax dropped on my finger while lighting the unity candle. My groom talked me through that with a whisper and a smile. And my nerves disappeared.
10. It was the beginning of an adventure of a lifetime...with many more adventures left to go.

Happy anniversary to my sweet husband who loves me more than I deserve. I love you.Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00136291767656065524noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-88466336584802156452013-06-19T12:48:00.001-07:002013-06-19T12:48:07.624-07:0010 Things ThursdayI'm always finding reviews and recommendations for new and interesting books as I crawl across the web. I have started writing down titles and authors for future reference. But every once in a while, if a book looks really good, I'll go to our community library website and place a hold on it to get it as soon as possible. That happened this week. I saw somewhere a review of "Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six-Word Memoirs By Writers Famous and Obscure." What?! Six word memoirs?! I knew I must read it! I picked it up from the library yesterday and couldn't put it down. I am finding it extremely fascinating to see how people describe their lives in six words. Some funny, some sad, some touching, some thought provoking.

I decided to mark my favorites planning for this post. I started marking...and marking...and marking. Here's what happened.

Things don't always work out according to plan. Actually, very few things work out according to plan. When I was 16, I swore I'd never get married. This July I will celebrate my 21st wedding anniversary with the boy I started dating just before I turned 17. Then we didn't really plan when we'd have kids. But after 7 years of marriage we decided we'd try it. Then again a year and a half later. And then one more time seven years later. I certainly didn't intend to have two middle schoolers and a pre schooler at this time in my life. But my plans are not God's plans.

When I started college, I called myself a business major. I took accounting and economics and business law. And kinda hated it. And was led, in spite of my immaturity and naivety, to education. I had wanted to be a teacher since I was in 1st grade. But after 13 years of school, I was a little burned out and decided that 4 more years of school just to be able to spend a whole bunch more years at school wasn't what I wanted. But after a year of business classes, I changed my major and started taking education classes. And kinda loved it.

One of the draws of being a teacher, besides, you know, the influencing of young lives and all, was summers off. Ahhh...glorious summers off. And I did have summers off...for a while. I was a teacher for three years before Josh was born. And I had those summers off. All. By. Myself. I read and watched movies and went to the beach and did, well, I don't actually remember what else I did. Then I took a couple years off with the babies. And when I went back to work, I was able to take summers off. I was lucky, really. Many teachers have to find summer jobs to make ends meet every year.

But three years ago, things changed. Our family's job situation changed dramatically and when the opportunity came up to begin a summer child care program at our school, I decided to do it. It was a blessing, even though it meant no extended summer vacation. I worked a few days a week and had a few off. Still better than full time, but not ideal. Then last summer we were asked to have our summer program again. So we did. But at the end of the summer, we said, "No way!" to doing it again. We wanted our summer off!

But things don't always go according to plan. And Dave Ramsey would not want me to not work this summer. So here I am, working another summer. This time is a little different. I will get a couple of two week mini-breaks and have a couple of part time weeks. And all in all it's a pretty good summer job. I get to sit in the shade and watch a bunch of kids play all day...with a little bit of learning thrown in, but don't tell them that. I even get to read a little between all the activity. I was thinking as I was driving into town this morning how much I wished that I didn't have to work. But then I realized what a blessing this job is. I'm my own boss. I get to play all day. I get to take my kids with me. I get to spend as much time outside as I want. And I get paid pretty well for it.

All in all, not such a bad gig. And it serves to remind me that God's plans are always, always bigger...and smarter...than mine.Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00136291767656065524noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-80027459930321094962013-06-16T21:11:00.000-07:002013-06-16T21:11:43.943-07:00Blessed SundayThere doesn't seem to be much time for blogging during this whirlwind of life I find myself in. Always places to be and people to see. Dishes to wash and clothes to fold. Shopping and cooking and more dishes. Kids to hold and enjoy and play with. A husband who has his own whirlwind swirling, and whose path occasionally crosses mine. And work. Yes, it's summer vacation from school, but not completely for me. I am sharing the summer child care job with my sister. Two weeks on, two weeks off. Tomorrow will start my second week on. Long, hot, exhausting days spent with lots of kids ready to play the summer away. Both easier and harder than teaching somehow. But this week, even in my dreading the early mornings and constant "kid-ness" of my days, I have learned to count my summer job as a blessing. It allows me to work during the summer on my own terms. To take my own kids with me. To work on school projects a little during the day. To sit in the shade and listen to little voices and hearty laughs. And maybe even read a chapter or two between activities.

So, would I like to have my summer off completely? Yes. Of course. But since that isn't in the plans right now, I am choosing to count this opportunity as the blessing that it is.Jenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00136291767656065524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-80949867833694341822013-06-02T19:52:00.003-07:002013-06-02T19:52:47.204-07:00Blessed Sunday--Julianna Turns 5!

Talk about a blessing! My daughter is very near the top of my list. She is a gift. An unexpected, but very welcome gift. Someone not long ago said, upon observing the ages of my children, that she must have been a surprise baby. I felt the need to correct them and tell them, that yes, it was a surprise that I wanted to have a third child. And it was a surprise that God put that desire in my heart. And it was a surprise that God's timing wasn't exactly my timing. But we fully intended to add her to our family. Crazy as it all seems, even to me.

And now, 5 years later, I hardly remember my life without her. She is amazing. So different from her brothers. She's made me be a different kind of mommy. A nail painting, hair braiding, doll playing kind of mommy. Sometimes even now I see her from across the room and have to remind myself that she's mine. And as honest as I was being when I was pregnant with her about being okay with either a boy or a girl, I was secretly hoping for a girl. (I can say that now, right?)

I love that she is a girly-girl even if I'm not. I love that she loves all animals, real or stuffed. I love that she loves music and makes up her own songs. I love that she loves her brothers and that they adore her. I love that she still wants to sit on my lap. I love all the memories that I have of her and with her over the last five years.

She is sweet and funny and silly and smart. Her best friend is her cousin Abby. Her favorite colors are pink, purple, and green. She likes to wear dresses, the frillier the better. She doesn't like to wear shoes and will take them off wherever and whenever she can. She likes to color and do puzzles. She is fearless, which sometimes causes fear in me. I told her daddy when we decided to name her Julianna, that she would have to be quite a girl for such a big name. And she is, undoubtedly, quite a girl.

Happy birthday to my sweet 5 year old. I love you, Miss Julianna.

My baby. The second one that I could call my own. He was amazingly adorable with his fuzzy blond head and the bluest of blue eyes. Somehow, even on that first day, I knew there was something special about this baby. And the last twelve years have proven that to be true.

Adam is like no other kid I've ever known...and I've known a lot of kids.

He's a thinker. Even when he was very little, he would ask questions that shouldn't come from such a little boy. He wanted to know about the world and everything and everyone in it.

He's a butterfly chaser...literally and figuratively. He has always loved bugs (except for spiders!) and can get distracted by the smallest of creatures...and everything else.

He is hilarious and clever. His sense of humor is well beyond his years and always has been.

He is nearly impossible to discipline. When he was little I could never get through a sentence reprimanding him without laughing. He quickly learned how to play that to his advantage. I literally had to look away while I fussed at him. (It's easier now that he's bigger and I have grown slightly immune to his charms.)

He is highly sensitive to his feelings and the feelings of others. He knows what others are feeling and tries to make it better if he can. He's a fixer and a mediator and a peacemaker.

He stands up for the underdog. And gets his feelings hurt if he's the underdog and nobody stands up for him.

He is exponentially silly. He loves to play and have fun to the point of driving his poor mama crazy.

He can't make a decision to save his life. I learned a long time ago to not be in hurry if he's trying to decide on something. He needs time. And sometimes guidance. But in the end, his decisions are sound.

He is smart. School smart and people smart.

He is quiet around others, but so not quiet at home with us.

He is sweet as sweet can be most of the time, but has a temper that earned him the nickname, "Jack-Jack."

He likes what he likes and doesn't like what he doesn't like. No middle ground.

He would hate this post if he knew about it. But I think someday he will appreciate it.

He is my middle child. My second son. My joy. My Adam D.

Happy, happy, happy birthday sweet boy. I love you.

The first smile. The first tooth. The first word and step and day of school. We remember those days and write them in baby books and on calendars. We take pictures to capture those moments to treasure forever. We ask other parents about their child's firsts and compare stories. Firsts are important.

But what about lasts. I don't remember the last time Adam sat on my lap. Or the last time Josh asked me to snuggle with him before bed. I don't remember the last time I washed their hair or put on their socks. I don't even remember the last book I read to them. Or the last time we sang silly songs before bed. Those things just kind of stop happening. And at the time, it's a relief. Finally they can dress/feed/bathe themselves! But I wish I would have known. If I would have known that the last time Adam sat on my lap was going to be the last time, I wouldn't have been in such a hurry to do whatever it was that made me get up. If I would have known the last time I snuggled with Josh at bedtime was going to be the last time, I would have lingered just a little bit longer. I would have smelled their hair and hugged a little tighter and closed my eyes and stamped the memory into my mind. But I didn't know.

I have a few more chances with Julianna. I have had enough firsts and lasts by now to know that they happen all too quickly. She's almost five. She still sits on my lap. But sometimes I find myself thinking, "Really, girl? You are getting so big and it would be way more comfortable if you would just sit beside me." Then I remind myself that this might be the last time. And it's suddenly a lot more comfortable. She still wants bedtime rituals. And as tired as I am most nights, I still stay and pray and read or sing or snuggle or tell stories.

When will the last time come? Will I remember it? I still have a few lasts with the boys, too, and am watching for them. But not looking as forward to them as I did before. The last time Adam holds my hand as we walk through a parking lot? I don't want that one to come like it already has with Josh. The last time Josh asks me to make him hot chocolate? I'd be fine making him hot chocolate as long as I can lift the cup. The last time Julianna wants to follow me everywhere I go? I'm okay with even that lasting a while longer. Because I know that there will be a last time.

It's true that I look forward to the day when I can be by myself for five minutes without someone needing me. And it's true that I went to Arby's for lunch by myself on Saturday and it felt like a mini vacation. And it's also true that to some lasts I bid "good riddance" and never looked back (diapers, bottles, strollers...). But I hope that some lasts never come. And that there are some lasts that I know are inevitable but that I want to remember forever.

But for now I will look forward to the firsts and watch for the lasts. And when one of those lasts happen, maybe I will be able to catch it and hold on to it for just a little longer.

And if you enjoyed that post, check out this one from May of 2007. My astute friend Kathy* said she thinks I need some new ideas (after giving me copies of both posts with similarities highlighted). I think my ideas are so great that I have to write them twice. Whatever.
We had a family vote and, although not unanimous, we chose Seattle. It's around a six hour drive from home. And there are lots and lots of fun things to do for all of us. I was excited to take Julianna to the zoo and aquarium for the first time. (The thought of that sold the one Seattle holdout in the family to the idea.) And then there's Pike Place Market and the Space Needle and The Pacific Science Center.

I began planning our trip last winter. Because that's part of the fun, right? We have a friend who was able to get us a great hotel room for an even greater price. It was amazing, really. And made the trip possible on our budget.

Our trip began on Sunday. We went to the sunrise service at church and ate Patty's amazing breakfast and then headed out. We made only one stop at a scenic view pullout in the middle of Washington.

We got to the hotel early Sunday evening after a very peaceful trip across the state of Washington. The kids were so excited to swim so we all got changed and headed to the pool right away. We had the pool and hot tub all to ourselves which was nice. After a few hours swimming we decided to order Domino's pizza. It was declared by some of us as the "best pizza ever." I think it was the hunger talking. (I still feel a little guilty because I think I accidentally gave Ralph, the delivery guy, only a five cent tip. Oops.) The kids were thrilled that there was a pool and swam for hours every day we were there. It was great fun watching them play together. We made a stop at Target for some pool toys on the second day. Julianna would throw the dive sticks and the boys would fetch them. For hours they did that...together...with no arguing. It might have been a spring break miracle.

Monday morning we got up and had breakfast at the hotel. We all loved the waffle maker! And since it was supposed to be the best weather day of the week, we headed to Woodland Park Zoo. It was about a 25 minute drive through Seattle. I was glad Arrty was driving. Those big city drivers are crazy!

Then an Argosy Seattle Tour Cruise. It's a great way to see the piers and the city. Plus the narrator adds lots of interesting facts like the chair in the top of one of the buildings that supposedly brings luck to single women who want to get married. It's said that they will be married within a year after sitting in it. And remember the picture of the Beatles fishing out of a window? That building is on the Seattle piers. And the women's restroom voted the "Most Beautiful Restroom in the US" is housed in one of Seattle's skyscrapers.

The last stop of the day was the EMP (Experience Music Project) Museum. It's very interesting for older people, but not so much for little ones. We spent a short time there, though, and saw some interesting music memorabilia. There was a Jimmy Hendrix exhibit, a Nirvana exhibit, a guitar museum, and an exhibit about the history of the leather jacket. The kids' favorite exhibit was the history of the Art of Video Games.

It was a great trip. We had such a good time even though by the end of the week we were all exhausted. We did lots of walking, lots of talking, and lots of laughing. We learned a few things about the world and each other. And we made some wonderful memories. Which is what it was all about anyway.
